10 Ways to Get Your Home Ready for Spring

By in

With Spring blooming and Easter around the corner, now is the perfect time to prepare your home for the new season so you can make the most of the brighter days and warmer weather. These 10 tips will help you get started and welcome spring with open arms!

Now let’s clear away those cobwebs!

1.Tidy your driveway, patio and decking areas

Winter can leave a lot of the outdoor areas of your home covered in dirt, debris, mould, moss and weeds. Brush away the debris with a strong outdoor broom and pull out weeds and stop them from returning with a good weed killer. Don’t forget to check your driveway as well, more often than not you will find some weeds growing. Rent a power washer to clean decking and patio areas, this will give your house an instant facelift and make it look much more inviting from the outside.

2.Clean down or invest in outdoor furniture

In order to make the most of the outdoors, you need somewhere to sit and relax or even enjoy al-fresco meals! If you already own patio furniture, it is undoubtedly covered in dirt and moss after winter. The best way to clean it is with a power washer or scrubbing down with hot, soapy water. If you are looking to purchase some outdoor furniture, there is some fantastic, quirky items available at Whitestores, and if you are aiming to spend a lot of time outside it may be worth investing in a fire pit or outdoor heaters.

3.Clean out the gutters

A horrible job we know. But necessary, especially if your house is surrounded by trees. Your gutters are likely to have collected a lot of debris and leaves over winter, so it is important to clear them out to allow water to flow freely. Although the weather is getting warmer, spring is notorious for April showers so make sure your gutters don’t overflow by taking the time to clean them out.

4.Flower Power

Get your gardening gloves on and plant some beautiful flowers and foliage in plant pots and flower beds around your house. If you enjoy fresh vegetables and herbs, why not consider planting some of your own? Visit your local garden centre or watch online tutorials to gather advice on when to plant what and by summer you will be eating fresh greens and home-grown salads. If you are not a keen gardener, you can always buy store-bought flowers in pots to place in and outside the house or spend some money investing in a gardener.

5.Replace Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector Batteries

You are supposed to change the batteries in your smoke alarm at least once a year and with many people’s busy schedules it is often a necessity people forget. So, when you are prepping your house for spring take the time to replace the batteries, it is quick and easy and just might save your life.

6.Clean and Open the Windows

Either do it yourself or hire a professional but try to clean them inside and out so they are dirt and smudge free ready for spring. If you have patio doors, wash them down as well so you have the best view of your beautiful spring garden. Whilst you are having a spring clean, open up the windows and leave your house to air to get rid of musty smells.

7.Switch it up!

If you don’t want to dip into your savings but desperately want to change the look of your living room/ bedroom or garden room why not move your furniture around and create fresh new spaces? You will be surprised at how moving your sofa and rearranging ornaments can make a difference to the look and feel of a room. Also, if there is a piece of furniture that is un-used and just sits collecting dust, remove it and enjoy the extra space it provides. If you want to create even more of a spring look, change the upholstery, remove thick wintery rugs and throws and change your cushions to lighter, more colourful fabrics.

8.Nature Inspired Décor

Nature inspired décor is incredibly trendy right now. Think natural materials, neutral colours, sustainably produced accessories and indoor pot plants. This trend is classic and longer lasting with nothing screaming more spring/ summer than nature-inspired elements.

9.Mix and Match Patterns

To counteract simplistic, neutral tones, patterned accessories are also really key this season – and not just one pattern, but a mix match of different styles and textures used together. Plain furniture, neutral walls and white flooring act as a blank canvas to highlight patterned cushions, wallpaper and textured colourful rugs. JDWilliams have some fantastic spring inspired accessories that follow this trend.

10.Freshen Your Senses

After spring cleaning and opening the windows, you might be rid of musty smells that have built up over winter but adding scented candles and diffusers in the bathroom is a fantastic way to freshen up your house even more. Fruity and floral scents will create spring vibes and in terms of aesthetics, opt for scented candles in bright colours and patterned holders so they look as beautiful as they smell.
