What’s better than a cosy room to escape to on these cold and rainy winter afternoons? We may be following the American design style, but we think a ‘Snug’ is the perfect addition to any home. Treat it as a small, chill out room that you can retreat to on a bleak winters day to read a book, or a place to sit on a summer evening with a glass of wine, or a cosy space for family board games. Snugs typically include limited technology and what’s better than a tech free zone these days?
Here at John O’Connell our team of professionals have put together their tips on how to create the perfect snug.
1. Think about your furniture.
You’re coming into your snug to relax, so make sure your furniture reflects this. You don’t need to break the bank but make sure you choose a sofa or loveseat that is cosy; you want to pick something that you can snuggle into and loose track of time. If you want some ‘you’ space, add a chair with soft cushions and a footstool or a recliner.
2. Layer your lighting
Lighting your snug will be key to creating the ambiance of the room. You want your snug to feel warm, cosy and inviting, creating a haven from the pace of life. Layer your snug with lighting – incorporate dimmable ceiling lights with lamps and candles to help you control your lighting and adapt it to your mood. Perhaps try using an exposed lightbulb. Not only is this a practical source of light but it also creates an affordable design staple.
3. Choose calming colours
Choose a colour palette for your snug with tones that you find calming. Whether it’s a beige, a heritage grey or a deep blue, make the items in your room fit within this scheme. We love a neutral colour palette which allows you to build up the tones and make the room feel warm by using a variation of colours with cushions and throws.
4. Install a fire feature
If you don’t have a fireplace in your home you can still add a fire feature. There are some incredible (and affordable) electric fire options and beautifully designed freestanding fire features. If you’re looking to go all out in your snug, then have a log burner installed into your home. This is a pricey addition but trust us… totally worth it! There is no better feeling than snuggling up in front of a real fire on a cold winter’s day.
5. Get cosy!
When we want to relax and get cosy, the first thing we usually do is to layer up or put on our softest PJ’s, so do the same to your snug. Add in a selection of scatter pillows in different shapes, sizes and most importantly textures. Different textures will help to layer up your room without having to add in lots of pieces. We think Blankets and throws are another essential touch, so make sure you have one for every member of the family (including the dog). Display your throws on the sofa and keep a basket next to your seating of choice with further blankets for those extra cold nights.
