Mistley Village Hall Refurb, Essex
Mistley Village Hall, a community venue that is bigger, better and brighter
We are proud to have completed the work on the village hall extension and new washroom facilities.
At the heart of the community, Mistley Village Hall is home to several local groups including Mistley Kid’s Club, the Autumn Days over 60s club, and Barnardo’s Stay and Play. The hall is an important leisure venue too, hosting private functions and a wide variety of clubs and classes.
The newly refurbished and extended hall now boasts a new entrance reception, additional storage space, and an accessible wet room and bathroom facilities. Other improvements include enhanced security, energy-saving upgrades including a more efficient and flexible heating system, insulation and double-glazed windows and it even has a new public toilet that is available to the many visitors to the woods and recreation grounds.
Martin Rayner is Chairman of Mistley Parish Council and is also a member of the Mistley Village Hall Management Committee.
We had wanted to extend the facilities at Mistley Village Hall and bring the building into the 21stcentury for a long time,” explains Martin. “Our main priorities were to create much-needed additional storage space and accessible bathroom facilities, as well as a more up-to-date venue. It was a lot of work, but in 2014 we finally had the funding in place to go ahead.
The £115,000 project was funded by grants from Mistley Maltings Trust, the Community Initiatives Fund (CIF), Mistley Parish Council and the village hall committee. Mistley Kids Club also joined the bid and through them we received funding from Catalyst to create the accessible wet room and other facilities for children with special needs.
John O’Connell was appointed as part of the tender process,” says Martin. “Price was a big consideration but it was important for us to use a competent building company and they didn’t let us down. We had really good service all the way through; they kept us informed and worked with us to keep the hall open while the building work was going on. Keeping the site open was critical; we didn’t want to and couldn’t afford to lose our users. We had terrible weather for most of the build but John O’Connell came in on time and, most importantly, on budget and we were, and still are delighted with the results.
When we had funding to upgrade the toilets, John O’Connell was again selected, and once again they did a superb job for us. The improvements to Mistley Village Hall have enriched the experience for our users and created a facility that we can advertise confidently as a first-class but affordable community venue.”
